Miami-Dade

Coral Gables

Tree-lined, historic, family-oriented

History

Built by George Merrick starting in 1921, Coral Gables was one of America's first master-planned communities — a "City Beautiful" of Mediterranean Revival architecture, grand boulevards, and coral-rock landmarks like the Biltmore Hotel and Venetian Pool. It remains one of Miami-Dade's most tightly regulated, historic neighborhoods.

Fun facts

  • Founder George Merrick required Mediterranean Revival architecture and coral-rock detailing by deed restriction — rules the city still enforces today.
  • The Venetian Pool, carved out of a former coral rock quarry in 1923, is on the National Register of Historic Places and still open to swim.
  • Coral Gables has its own police, fire, and public works departments — one of the few Miami-Dade cities to run nearly everything in-house.

Good to know for families

Coral Gables is consistently one of the most family-oriented cities in the county — strict zoning keeps streets low-density and tree-canopied, and it's zoned for some of Miami-Dade's top-rated public schools alongside well-known private schools like Ransom Everglades.

Moving from outside Miami-Dade?

If you're relocating from out of state, know that Coral Gables enforces some of the strictest architectural and landscaping review rules in Florida — even paint colors and tree removal can require city approval, so factor that into renovation plans.
