Miami-Dade

Hialeah

Cuban heritage, dense, working-class

History

Founded in 1925 around an aviation field and the Hialeah Park horse-racing track, Hialeah became a major landing point for Cuban immigrants from the 1960s onward. It's now one of the most densely populated cities in Florida and has one of the highest concentrations of Cuban-Americans in the country.

New construction

New construction in Hialeah leans smaller-scale than its high-rise neighbors — recent approvals include a 71-unit apartment building and the Flightway Nineteen mixed-use project with over 91,000 sq ft of commercial and warehouse space, alongside steady single-family building from Lennar, D.R. Horton, and other national builders.

Fun facts

  • Hialeah is the second-most populous city in Miami-Dade after Miami itself, and one of the most densely Cuban-American cities in the U.S.
  • Hialeah Park Race Track, opened in 1925, was once home to a flock of flamingos so famous it inspired the pink color scheme used across the city.
  • Spanish is the primary language spoken at home for the vast majority of Hialeah households — it's one of the most Spanish-speaking cities in the country.

Good to know for families

Hialeah is a working- and middle-class family city with some of the most affordable housing in Miami-Dade — it's largely single-family and duplex housing rather than high-rises, which appeals to families wanting more space and yard for the price.

Moving from outside Miami-Dade?

If you're moving from outside the Cuban-American community, know that daily life here runs heavily in Spanish — city services are bilingual, but expect Spanish to be the default in stores, restaurants, and casual conversation more than almost anywhere else in the county.
